Romance

In editing fiction, the primary concerns are editing to the publisher’s preferred style guide, and respecting the preferences of the author. In this case, I suggested changes based on the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS), which is widely recognized in the trade publishing industry, as well as the author’s style sheet. In addition, I use the Merriam-Webster dictionary for spelling questions and multiple internet tools for fact-checking.

Academic Writing

Style guides for academic writing vary based on the subject matter: MLA is standard for humanities writing, while APA and AMA are used for social sciences/education and medicine/biology, respectively. In this example, the requirement was for footnoted citations rather than in-text, parenthetical ones that are usual in MLA style.
